I've been asking actors, executives and broadcasters for fifteen years what three vital things you must do at the end of a sentence (and I don't include stop and breathe), and no one has given me the answer!
You might think that someone like Tony Blair would have sufficient training to communicate effectively. He leaves most of his sentences open which reflects a lack of knowledge or indecision. This does not give confidence to the listener.
Finding ‘mental commas’.
Here’s an example of how easy it is to get it wrong:
read the following two lines and notice the comma has been moved.
This simple change completely alters the meaning of the sentence!
I hope it makes you smile!
Woman, without her, man would be lost.
Woman, without her man, would be lost.
Read and speak slowly.
