PSR™ Method
(Presentation Skills & Reading)

The BBC

Thanks Steve!

I only wish I had known about your PSR™ method while I was actually working for the BBC! I was a producer and presenter at the BBC World Service for ten years and what I know now (and practise) would have saved a lot of production time and made programmes more effective.

During the course of that decade I must have produced thousands of programmes and presented many hundreds. A lot of them lacked one essential ingredient that is supposed to be the lifeblood of every broadcaster – listenability. There was no formal training at the BBC and when guidance was offered it wasn’t a patch on PSR.

I learned more about reading and broadcasting in two half-day sessions with you Steve, than I did in ten years at the BBC. Only now can I count myself a professional broadcaster and voiceover.

The BBC is the greatest broadcasting icon in the world and produces some of the best programmes in the world, so it’s hard to believe that it has a voice training department that does not have a technique for training newsreaders, reporters and presenters.

I understand this department costs over half a million pounds a year. Some BBC employees told me that their trainers advise presenters to ‘find someone you like and copy them’!

This amateurish approach is why so many BBC employees come to Voice Master™ to train in the PSR™ Method. They want to learn a professional technique, but they have to pay for it themselves.

The BBC voice training department is not fit for purpose. The Corporation could save most of this money and at the same time improve its ratings, but like so many large organisations, it’s difficult to find the person responsible.

It is so difficult that I have written several letters to the Corporation this year and, to date I have not had a reply.

Many thanks for all your help on the Voice Master course. At first it felt a bit strange, learning how to read again. However, once we got started, I realised how much I actually took reading out loud for granted or, more importantly, how when we read aloud, we don’t do it properly.

Working in the media, my job is all about communication, and thanks to this course, I can do my job with that added confidence. As a floor manager. I often have to coach presenters in reading their own scripts. I am now able to do this more effectively, having learned of the various techniques involved in the PSR™ Method. I also became more aware how many people working in television and radio have not been taught the basics in presentation and delivery of scripts.

I would definitely recommend this caused anyone of any occupation. You don't have to work in television, it can help you in any situation. Not only do you learn the techniques of reading from voice-overs, but you also become aware of your own voice, how you can control it and adapt it to different situations. Whether you are reading the news or dealing with a problematic customer in a shop, the techniques learned on the Voice Master course will certainly help you.
